Sita Bierma-Zeinstra’s research has been directed at osteoarthritis (OA) and related disorders. She leads a large group (60 fte) of PhD students, research assistants, associate professors, assistant professors, post-doc researchers. The research the last five years is mainly directed at finding responsive subgroups for specific treatments, early stage identification of OA in the primary care, and early stage education and treatment. Large new research projects she leads are directed at the prevention of OA, and at biomechanical load factors identification and their role in the progression and phenotyping of OA, She also initiated and chairs the international OA Trial Bank for subgroup analyses with individual patient data (www.oatrialbank.com). So far, she was supervisor for over 40 successfully completed and defended PhD theses. In 2015 she received the OARSI clinical research award.
